An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is used to reduce pain caused by spinal stenosis or disc herniation resulting in inflammation of the spinal nerves. Pain can be localized in your neck, arms, legs, and/or back. ESI is an effective treatment for pain in each of these regions, and relief may last for a matter of days or even years. The minimally invasive injection is delivered to the epidural space, a fatty area between the vertebrae and the protective sac surrounding the spinal nerves, with the goal of helping you return to normal physical activity.
